Dear Sirs, One of my friend had arranged his daughter’s Marriage recently. After betrothal, family of bridegroom started to raise demands and mental harassment through phone to my friend’s family. Hence, bridegroom family informed that if the demands are not met by bride’s side, they would stop the marriage. Now, my friend’s family has mental trauma and pain and afraid of society. So, I request that the following may kindly be advised and clarified.1. Is there any legal remedies for this type of harassment. if at all, what steps to be taken by my friend. 2. Is audio evidence is enough to take legal action. or any other evidence is needed. 3. Is there any possibility to recover his (my friend) expenditure amount ( Spent towards betrothal by my friend).

Your Friend has remedies under the law. Asking for dowry before or after the marriage, both are included as offence under dowry prohibition act and your friend has the right to approach the police stating that they are demanding dowry. Secondly, your friend can send them a legal notice for refund of the expenses. Further, the voice recordings are sufficient to put the criminal action in motion for them to stop raising these demands and it is better not to get the daughter married in that family because even if you compromise today thinking about reputation, your daughter happiness is what you are trading for this compromise. The basic nature of any person will not change and the demands may be raised later for which if not psychical, mental torture and harassment can happen with the daughter.
