I gave my number to a complete stranger when I was in class 12. What if he was criminal?
Question
I gave my number to a complete stranger when I was in class 12. I was very young and was not knowing if anything can go wrong. I used to talk to that boy. He told me tha he is also studying in class 12…that was 8 years back. but my question is what if he lied. What if he was criminal. Is there any chance of me getting arrested for him being criminal. Although I do not have that number anymore. I have change my number long back.

In the fact situation as provided by you, if that person is criminal and is indulged in activities which are heinous, in such cases if the police takes out his call record which has ur number also then in that case the police can inquire from you regarding ur relation with him. Further if u were in contact with him beyond eight years then it is most unlikely that the call details of his number will be traced. So even if he is a criminal, u cannot be linked to him via call details.
Changing ur number doesn’t help because the telecom operator would have the details of a particular number issued/registered in your name. So from that you can be located but since in ur case u are saying that you are not in contact with him from last 8 years, even if your details are procured yet the police will have a weak case to prove anything against you.
No, that person was not criminal. He was son of army professional. I just asked a hypothetical question because there are many apps through which a person can talk to strangers to make friends… And you can not trust strangers. So I want to understand law regarding this.
Okay, hope your question has now been answered.
