My friend posted some defamatory comments about me on facebook. i issued him a legal notice for removing such defamatory content as because of such comments, our common friends stopped talking with me properly and started giving me cold behaviour. initially I could not understand what is happening then one of my friend told me about the defamatory post. what should be my next step for protecting my image?

As you said you have already issued legal notice despite that he has not removed the defamatory words posted against you. You can file a complaint against him for defamation and can claim compensation or damages for malign your reputation and image on society. Second opinion is you can lodge FIR agianst him under the provisions of IT Act.
