Wife not parting with household expenditute

Question

I Married my wife without taking a single penny. We both are employed. I have been bearing all the household expenditure and any expense that comes at home. My wife didn’t mind to take part in the expenditure and she always tells that she wanted to keep her funds only with her and wanted to share only when she feels its required. But she never shared her funds in the family. Later on we both decided to have the funds from both of us be saved in a savings account and i still bear the expenditure at home. This happened for couple of months and my wife revolted in the 3rd Month saying she wanted to be financially independent and maintain funds only with her. 1.)Are there any legal provisions that makes both wife and husband to be equally responsible on the household expenditure and the needs of the family. 2.) My wife pays her brother car loan and also gives some amount for free to her mother every month without informing me. Is that legally correct. Please guide.

Answer ( 1 )

  1. There is no law which states that the wife is also liable to contribute towards the household expenses. It is a mutual understanding between the parties. If she is repaying the loan of her brother and the brother is a dependant brother, there is no illegality in the same. However if you have an objection regarding the same, you can raise this issue with the family members of your wife.

As regards mother, if the father is not alive or is incapable to take care of the needs of the mother then even a married daughter is liable to maintain the mother who is not able to maintain herself.
